Roos van Haaften (1983) is a visual artist who draws with reflections and shadows. Her background in theatre has influenced her series of light installations: By using light to project around objects and figures, she creates novel landscapes that often have a sinister or melancholic character. Van Haaften initially studied the visual arts at ArtEZ University of the Arts (NL) which she continued studying at University of the Arts London (UK), achieving a theoretical master’s degree. Prior to this, she studied writing for theatre and performance at the University of the Arts Utrecht (NL). Working with light and shadow connects closely with her affinity to theatrical principles, especially the deconstruction of the fourth wall in which the viewer is involved in both the illusion and technique. As well as working in her studio, Van Haaften prefers to work on site-specific projects inspired by location or place.

Roos van Haaften’s work can be seen both nationally and internationally, including the KLIK! Festival at the Eye Filmmuseum in Amsterdam (2016), Garage Rotterdam (2017), Galerie Conrads in Düsseldorf (2017) and the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rijeka in Croatia (2018). In 2019 she was invited for a presentation at in Fotomuseum Winterthur (CH). Her work is included in various collections, such as the AkzoNobel Art Foundation, Collection de Groen and the KPMG Art Collection. She is a tutor at ArtEZ University of the Arts. Van Haaften is currently generously supported by the Mondriaan Fund and lives and works in Amsterdam.
